insert.eins / eskapade

insert.eins/eskapade is film and theatre: the performance at the Bellariakino now moves on to dietheater Künstlerhaus.
The Bellariakino was built in 1911 and is located right behind the Volkstheater. It is an old, fusty cinema with a foyer, a long, narrow, velvet-lined auditorium with a six-by-one-metre stage in front of the screen and a small room for the projectionist at the rear end. The foyer is connected by doors to the auditorium, that in turn has doors which open directly onto the street. Every afternoon at 4pm, the cinema shows (UFA) films from the thirties and forties. An audience of regulars with an average age of seventy-five comes to watch these films every day.
At first, I wanted to understand the celebrity cult, the emotions, the physicality celebrated on a daily basis at the Bellariakino. As a dancer and choreographer, I studied the films, the auditorium and the setting with regard to “getting closer”, increasingly coming to focus on gestures of (self-)touching. There followed extensive film research at the Bellariakino and at the Austrian Film Archive along with conversations about physical and societal aspects in the films of this era with the historian Frank Stern, film historian Elisabeth Büttner and Thomas Ballhausen from the Austrian Film Archive. Doris Uhlich
The starting point of the body material was the gestures of (self-)touching of Paula Wessely and Zarah Leander in films produced in Austria/Germany between 1933 and 1945. The gestures clash in bodies of different ages and in people with different biographies.
On 3 and 4 March 2006, the film screening took place as usual at 4pm, with Maskerade on the bill (1934, by Willi Forst and starring Paula Wessely). The interest lies in the unpredictable situation when the regular Bellaria audience / cinema audience mingles with a theatre audience, when the film gesture of the “perfect film world” breaks away from the screen, landing in the theatre’s black box, reformulating and touching it as purloined quotations collide with present-day bodies and biographies.
I met the players on the street, in the Volksgarten, at the Senior Citizens Fair, in pensioners clubs, at the Central Office for Pensioners, I spoke with the Erinnerungstheater Wien on the phone, with a former music teacher at the Conservatoire, asked people in the tram: Excuse me, I like you. No, not like that. May I ask you something? My name is Doris Uhlich and I am looking for older people for a theatre project. Doris Uhlich
