Gootopia site specific
For the finissage of the exhibition Schleim on September 6, 2026, Doris Uhlich presents the performative installation Gootopia site specific in the Lecture Hall Ruin of the Berlin Museum of Medical History at Charité.
Slime is a vital biological substance that causes ambivalent reactions: revulsion and shudders, but also curiosity and a desire to touch. The reason for its appealing and at the same time off-putting effects is that it is something which is hard to grasp in our technologised society defined by the wish for sterility and stability: slime is neither wholly solid nor fluid, neither endogenous nor exogenous, and sometimes it is both. In science fiction it commonly appears in conjunction with aliens, standing for the non-human, the unknown that spreads by flowing.
In Gootopia site specific (“goo,” meaning slime), the interaction between performer Ann Muller and various slime substances takes center stage. Slime is both material and performer: it performs with, on, and within her body. Human and slime touch, connect, and merge, forming alliances. New connections emerge, bodily boundaries become fluid, and spaces of association open up for other, slimy, utopian forms of life.
The audience is invited to freely choose their position and perspective within this slippery universe and to understand the body as a porous, touchable organism, interconnected with other forms of life.
